5 more get death sentence for China riots
Beijing, Dec 24: Five more people were sentenced to death by Chinese court for their involvement in ethnic rioting in Urumqi, a local government spokeswoman said on Thursday, Dec 24.
The new trial brings the number of death sentences for the rioting to at least 22, of which at least nine have already been carried out.
"Altogether 22 defendants in five cases went on trial on Dec 22 and Dec 23," Hou Hanmin, director of the Xinjiang Government Information Office was quoted by news agency as saying.
Uighurs attacked Han Chinese in Urumqi on Jul 5, after protests against Han attacks on Uighur workers in South China.
At least 197 people died, mostly Han Chinese, who form the majority in China.
