Pak to release 100 Indian fishermen

Karachi, Dec 23: 100 Indian fishermen detained in Pakistan for encroachment of its territorial waters will be released on humanitarian grounds, the prime minister's office said on Thursday, Dec 23.

"As a humanitarian gesture, prime minister Yusuf Raza Gilani has decided to unilaterally release 100 Indian fishermen who have been in Pakistani custody," the prime minister's office said.

Shahab Siddiqui, assistant superintendent of Karachi's Malir prison said that as per the government's directive, arrangements have been made to release 100 fishermen, including nine children, out of the 618.

India and Pakistan often release fishermen arrested for illegally venturing into its territorial waters on humanitarian grounds.

A joint judicial committee to resolve issue of prisoners and fishermen in each other's custody has been proposed by Pakistan.
