34 al-Qaeda members killed in Yemen

Sanaa, Dec 17: 34 al-Qaeda militants were killed and 17 others arrested by the Yemeni security forces as they foiled a planned series of suicide attacks on Thursday, Dec 17.

"The operation led to the foiling of an al Qaeda plan aiming to hit foreign and local interests and schools, including eight suicide bombers who were preparing explosive belts to carry out the plan," a security source said.

The incident occurred in Abyan province in the south and in Arhab directorate, north of the capital Sanaa.

Yemen is engaged in fighting against the Shi'ite rebellion in the north and separatist unrest in the south, apart from tackling al-Qaeda.
