Copenhagen summit: US, China clash
Copenhagen, Dec 11: The summit to bring a common agreement in carbon reduction ran into trouble as China and United States engaged heated argument over each others commitment to control carbon emission at the Copenhagen Summit on Wednesday, Dec 9.
China took offence to statement made by US chief negotiator Todd Stern in which he instructed China to stand firm on its commitment to cut carbon emission.
Retorting back China said that US should do some soul searching before making such statement as US itself has failed to meet its 17-year-old commitment to cut down carbon emission.
"What they should do is some deep soul-searching," said Yu Qingtai, China's chief climate negotiator.
Stern had said that China should move beyond making domestic announcement and engaged in transparent international agreement.
"China's announcement boosted optimism before the conference, but didn't go far enough," Said Stern.
China had earlier declared its decision to reduce carbon intensity of its industry upto 45 percent following president Barack Obama's decsion to the same in Nov, 2009.
