Nodal group for better news coverage during crisis

New Delhi, Dec 8: After the country's media came under heavy criticism over the coverage of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, the government is in the final stages of setting up an Empowered Nodal Group which would facilitate better news flow in the event of major crisis like 2008 terror attack.

“I would like to inform the House that formation of the nodal group is in the final stage," Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni told the Lok Sabha.

The setting up of the Nodal Group, would be acting as the single point authority for dissemination of news in the event of major crisis like 2008 terror attack, came in repose to a suggestion by the News Broadcasters Association (NBA).

“The government is not in favour of censoring news... But, nevertheless, we have been able to talk to editors about the contents," she said, mentioning that the media has show restraint and self regulation over the past few months.
