Rao made a mistake by trusting BJP: Chidambaram

New Delhi, Dec 8: Home Minister P Chidambaram gave the government's reply to the Liberhan Commission report on the Babri Masjid demolition amid slogan shouting and uproar in the parliament.

After two days of debate on the report, Chidamabaram made a strong statement saying that the then prime minister Narasimha Rao made a bad political judgement by trusting Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which cost him the government.

Holding the Uttar Pradesh government responsible for the Dec 6, 1992 incident, the home minister said that BJP, Shiv Sena and VHP in connivance with the then UP chief minister, Kalyan Singh demolished the majid in Ayodhya.

Contradicting BJP's continual denial that the demolition was not pre-planned, the minister said that the masjid was pulled down from within and stressed that demolition was well planned.

Chidambram said that Advani and other BJP leaders, who promised peace, led the kar sewaks carrying iron rods and hammers, while the police and the administration were just mute spectators.

The opposition created ruckus in the parliament throughout the one-hour speech.
