American pop star Naomi croons for climate change in Kashmir
Gulmarg (J-K), Dec 8 (ANI): American pop star and YouTube sensation Terra Naomi has staged a concert to draw the attention of world leaders towards the fast melting glaciers of Kashmir.
Amidst chilling weather, Naomi sung 'Say It's Possible' in Gulmarg, the song which won her a YouTube Music award, as a part of her global campaign to create awareness about climate change.
Naomi is on her maiden visit to Kashmir on the invitation of Mercy Corps, one of the relief and development organisation endeavoring to alleviate suffering and poverty by helping people build secure, productive and just communities.
"I came to Kashmir to do this concert in order to help raise awareness on local and also at global level, awareness for climate change and to help show what is actually going on in here and also to show support to the people of the region and hopefully get other people involved. It's sort of beginning of something to me. I want to get other people's attention focused on this area so that we can perhaps help," said Naomi.
Shakeel Ramsoo, a glaciologist, said that global warming is severely affecting the climate of Kashmir.
"In Gulmarg, ten years back during the month of November and January, there used to be snowfall more than one metre but now it's less than half a foot. So this is the situation all over Kashmir. We have observed that erratic distribution of snow and scanty snowfall will severely affect the water sources in Kashmir," said Ramsoo.
Kashmir this year witnessed a dry spell, mainly due to climate change caused by extensive deforestation. (ANI)
