India's first female Dalit mayor passes away

New Delhi, Dec 7: India's first female Dalit Mayor, Aruna Sainya passed away on Sunday, Dec 6 at the age of 45 after prolonged illness.

Quoting family sources, media reports say that Sainya was suffering from cancer for the last six months. Her last rites were performed on Sunday, Dec 6 evening at the Laxmiganj Crematorium.

Sainya was not only the first female Dalit Mayor, she was the first woman Mayor of the Gwalior Municipal Corporation (GMC) from 1995 to 2000.

Elected at the age of 31, Sainya worked towards regularising 648 daily wage workers for the first time in the GMC"s history.
