Sony Ericsson to shut Chennai centre
Raleigh, Nov 19: Mobile handset maker Sony Ericsson has decided to shut several facilities, including its research and development (R&D) center at Chennai, a official spokesperson said on Thursday, Nov 19.
The decision is estimated to lay off 1,600 jobs globally.
"Sony Ericsson's Indian office merges with Asia-pacific region and its Chennai office work will be shifted to Lund, in Sweden and gets phased out to the development center in Kista," spokesperson Stacy Doster said.
"The company sites at Research Triangle Park, Seattle, Miami, San Diego (all in the US) and Kista, Sweden, are affected by the move," Doster said.
Sony Ericsson had set up a R&D unit for mobile phones in Chennai in 2007.
