Sheikh Hasina to receive Indira Gandhi peace prize

New Delhi, Nov 19: Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh Prime minister has been selected by Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust on Nov 19, for the prestigious Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development, 2009.

The international jury headed by Manmohan Singh said that Hasina has been chosen for her outstanding contribution to the promotion of democracy and pluralism.

The trust said that Hasina's single minded determination to transform Bangladesh into a middle-income country by 2021, by eliminating poverty and inequity,in keeping with her post-election endeavour "Vision 2021" made her a worthy contender for the award.

The cash prize of Rs 25 lakh and a citation will awarded to her in a function to be held later.

The recipient of Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development, 2008 was Mohamed ElBaradei, director general of IAEA .
