Book on 'Uncommon' creator of 'Common Man'

Bangalore, Nov 19: 'R K Laxman: The Uncommon Man', the biographical tribute to India's celebrated cartoonist written and compiled by his close friend Dr Dharmendra Bhandari was released on Thursday, Nov 19.

While His Excellency S C Jamir, Governor of Maharashtra launched the book in Mumbai, Mrs Gursharan Kaur launched it in New Delhi. His Excellency Hans Raj Bharadwaj, Governor of Karnataka released the large-format book in Bangalore.

Divided into five sections, the book pays tribute to the cartoonist who epitomised an average India and his every day struggles through his daily cartoon 'The Common Man'.

While Section 1 titled 'Sketch of a Genius' gives a detailed biographical sketch of Laxman, Section II titled 'Art' features a collection of Laxman's art which include variety of subjects in watercolours, pastels and ink.

In the Section III titled 'Caricature' the author has brought together the best of all the caricatures drawn by Laxman including that of Indian politicians and world leaders, litterateurs, actors, musicians, and sportsmen.

Section IV titled 'Humour' allows the readers to dive into the social and political commentary at its best achieved by Laxman's humour put into inimitable sketches.

Finally, Section V called 'Political Cartoons' the author has compiled all the important pieces which portray Laxman's precise and piercing commentary on significant political, social and economic event in Independent India.

Written by Dr Dharmendra Bhandari who has earned his doctorate in Commerce, 'The Uncommon Man' effectively brings to light the unknown facets of the creator of 'Common Man'.
