SC slams Center on child labour in beedi-rolling

New Delhi, Nov 17: Supreme Court has slapped a notice on the Center, in response to PIL filed by an NGO questioning the provision which allows child labour in beedi rolling in home-based workshops and government funded/aided schools.

The Court has directed the Ministry of Labour, Women and Child Development and the Ministry of Health to respond to the apeal of the NGO 'Health for Millions'.

The appeal challenges the proviso to Section 3 of the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986, which allows lawful engagement of a child in home-based beedi-making processes and government funded schools manufacturing beedis.

Speaking on the hindrance created by the proviso in curtailing child labour, Advocate Anand Grover presented that the legality given to employment of children under the proviso is creating an obstacle in stopping it.

Referring to Article 24 which forbids employment of children below 14 years, the NGO says that proviso violates the Article against child labour.
