7 newborns die at hospital, AP govt orders probe
Hyderabad, Nov 16: After seven new born babies mysteriously died at a government-run hospital in Vijayawada, the Andhra Pradesh government on Monday, Nov 16 ordered a probe into the incident
"We have deputed a team of doctors to probe the incident. If it is proved that the death was caused by the negligence by the hospital staff we will take action," Health Minister D Nagender, who ordered an enquiry into the incident, said.
The incident took place at Old Government Hospital in Vijayawada city on Sunday, Nov 16. Faulty incubators are believed to have caused the death of the infants who were two to three-days old.
The parent who alleged that the defective incubators caused failure of the oxygen system also accuse the doctors of negligence.
Locals who learned of the incident protested outside the hospital saying that the deaths were also the result of the ongoing strike by junior doctors who are demanding a hike in stipend.
The doctors initially claimed deaths were due to various ailments. They later agreed to the enquiry.
The opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) legislator D Umamaheswara Rao has called for a compensation of Rs 500,000 to the families who have lost their children at the hospital.
