Scrapping Class X exams still being debated: PM
New Delhi, Nov 14: Interacting with a group of children on the occasion of Children"s Day, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh assured them the move to scrap the Class X examination is still being debated on.
In the interaction organised by CNN-IBN, a student questioned the Prime Minister on the repercussions of an extreme step like doing away with the Class X board examinations.
"You are shielding them from difficulties," a child remarked.
Responding to this, Dr Singh said, “We are still debating on this issue. This is an experiment. We should not take a decision in haste."
In Sep 2009, HRD Minister, Kapil Sibal announced that the CBSE board examinations will be optional from the next academic year. Apart from this, a grading system was introduced from the current year.
When asked why the education was getting costlier in terms of the rise in school fees, Dr Singh said that this trend was limited to private schools while in government schools the authorities were doing what they could to ensure that education does not become a privilege for only the rich.
