Chhattisgarh by-polls: Congress thrashes BJP
Raipur, Nov 10: Contrary to the initial trend, Congress thrashed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to grab the Vaishali Nagar assembly seat in Chhattisgarh by-polls.
Till the 11th round of counting, Congress candidate Bhajan Singh Nirankari was trailing against BJP opponent Jageshwar Sahu. Gaining quickly in the last five rounds, Congress grabbed the seat defeating BJP by 1,600 votes.
While the media has termed this a 'shock deafeat', the analysts have called this drubbing 'a considerable blow' to the BJP.
The saffron party has ruled Chhattisgarh since Dec 2003 and even in the May 2009 Lok Sabha Elections BJP won 10 out of 11 LS seats in the state.
