'People's empowerment key to climate crisis'

New Delhi, Nov 6: At the backdrop of the impacts of climatic changes, a conference 'The Climate Crisis – People"s Potential and Need for Adaptation and Mitigation' was organised by Welthungerhilfe (formerly German Agro Action) and IGSSS (Indo - Global Social Service Society).

The conference featured discussion on impacts of climatic change from a grassroots perspective and guaranteed involvement of local level participation in decision making and policy formulation.

The main focus was on enhancing people's potential to combat the effects of climatic change through strategic planning.

Projects and participatory studies based on local experiences were highlighted to accentuate the role of agricultural and energy changes in climatic change mitigation and adaptation.

Keeping in mind Germany and South Asia's vulnerability to effects of climatic change, a 16 point policy statement concerning people's mitigation and adaption plans were put forward by the organisers on behalf of the concerned NGOs and government of South Asia and Germany.

The 16 point statement covered recommendations addressing governments, NGOs, international climate change negotiations and the COP MOP in Copenhagen, Dec 2009.
