WB: Rajdhani Express rescued from Maoists

Midnapore, Oct 28: After several hours of hostage-type situation, the Rajdhani Express with as many as 667 passengers onboard was secured after dusk by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the state police.

"The train is safe and passengers are safe," said Home Minister P Chidambaram after the operation to relieve the the train from the clutches of Maoist-backed group. He assured that there was no sign of adversary at the scene.

The activists of the People's Committee against Police Atrocities(PCPA) stopped the train at around 2 pm on Tuesday, Oct 27 in a jungle area in West Midnapore district.

The extremists also had 'kidnapped' the drivers and held the country ransom for about five hours demanding withdrawal of the joint security forces and release of some of their arrested leaders.

The train is now on its way to Delhi and is expected to reach the capital by evening.
