TN: Dalits enter temple for first time in 100 yrs
Chennai, Oct 28: After 100 years, Dalits in a village in Tamil Nadu for the first time were allowed to enter into Ekambareshwarar Temple, a media report said.
On Tuesday, Oct 27, the Chettpullam village in the Nagapattinam district saw a huge difference, when policemen escorted a group of Dalits into the temple, where they prayed for close to half an hour.
Earlier, Dalits were arrested when they tried to break into the temple. Villagers had also thrown stones to keep them away.
The government coordinated talks between Dalits and non-Dalits to a new agreement.
The police said it will stay on guard for a few days to ensure there is no violence in the village.
