SC orders judicial probe into Asthana's death

New Delhi, Oct 20: The Supreme Court has ordered judicial probe into Ashutosh Asthana's death in connection with the Ghaziabad Provident Fund scam.

The apex court on Tuesday, Oct 20 directed the Uttar Pradesh government to give a viscera report of main accused in the scam, Ashutosh Asthana to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for further examination.

The CBI has been asked to examine the report at All India Institute of Medical Science and submit a report to the court within eight weeks.

With this, the state government or the High Court can not interfere in the case.

Asthana, a clerk with the Ghaziabad district courts was the key accused-cum-star witness in the Rs 23-crore Ghaziabad PF scam, allegedly involving 34 judges.

Asthana was believed to be the bigwig in the scam involving the fraudulent withdrawal of social security fund from the district court's treasury from 2000 to 2008.

Asthana's mysterious custodial death in the Dasna district jail in Ghaziabad on Saturday, Oct 17, came as a major blow to the CBI investigation into the scandal.
