GEAC okays India's first GM crop Bt brinjal
New Delhi, Oct 14: Indians may soon be having an option to buy Genetically Modified (GM) Brinjal soon as the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) gave environmental clearance to the Bt brinjal.
Now, if the government gives its go ahead the vegetable will be marketed.
GEAC on Wednesday, Oct 14 gave its approval after evaluating the recommendations of a committee set up to study Mahyco's biosafety data.
If the government gives its approval, Bt Brinjal will be the first GM food in India and will be the first GM brinjal to be approved anywhere in the world.
GM crops are created after altering genetic material (DNA) for some advantage either to the producer or the consumer.
However, there is a huge fraction of people who doubt the bio-safety data of such crops having environmental implications in the country.
