California recognises gay marriage

California, Oct 13: Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill recognising gay marriages in the state.

The governor said that the decision was in tune with Supreme Court ruling which, upheld the marriages of same-sex couples, who tied the knot in California before voters approved Proposition 8.

Proposition 8, a state constitutional amendment was passed in Nov 2009, limiting marriage to a man and a woman.

The bill also stated that said gay and lesbian couples, who were married in other states after Proposition 8's passage would possess the same rights as California's domestic partners.
