Don't play with the court: SC tells Maya

New Delhi, Oct 5: Accusing the Uttar Pradesh government of constructing memorials despite the ban, the Supreme Court warned the state against playing political games with the judiciary.

"You don't play politics as you do it with other political parties in the Assembly," the Supreme Court told senior lawyer Harish Salve, who is appearing for the state on Monday, Oct 3.

The apex court rubbished Mayawati government's contention that there has been a misunderstanding, stating that it was the duty of the state to approach the court and seek necessary clarifications.

"We have read with deep pain your affidavit and the undertaking made by you was lacking in sincerity. It was just an eyewash," the bench comprising justices B N Agrawal and Aftab Alam said.

On Sep 8, the apex court had asked Mayawati government to immediately stop all the construction activity in the Lucknow park. However, the state government allegedly violated the court's order and went ahead with constructions.
