Groups urge Sonia Gandhi to seek Suu Kyi's immediate release and free Burma
New Delhi, Oct. 2 (ANI): The Burma Center Delhi on behalf of 58 Indian and International organizations submitted an appeal letter to Sonia Gandhi, President of All India Congress Committee (AICC) and Chairperson, UPA on Friday urging her to draw attention to Aung San Suu Kyi and to revise India's foreign policy and promote human rights in order to restore peace, harmony and fraternity in the region.
Dr. Alana Golmei, Coordinator of BCD, along with a group of Burmese activists submitted the appeal letter to Sonia Gandhi at her residence.
She said that the appeal letter was warmly accepted by the concern staff in the office. "We have great expectations from Madam Sonia Gandhi to take prompt action for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi as well as restoration of democracy in Burma.
Kim, New Delhi-based and exile Burmese and Campaign Coordinator of BCD recalled that "during nationwide people's uprising in Burma in 1988, the then Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi not only supported the people's movement but also offered shelter to democracy activists to continue for democracy in Burma".
