'Foreign universities need to follow quota laws'

New Delhi, Sep 27: Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal on Sunday, Sep 26 said that quota laws will be one of the pre-requisite conditions for foreign universities interested in setting-up their campuses here.

Sources said that the ministry has already prepared a draft bill dealing with the issue which will be placed before the Cabinet soon.

Giving details of the draft bill on Foreign Education Providers, Sibal, in an interview, said, they also need to take clearance from the accreditation committee for quality control.

When asked if these universities are expected to implement quota, Sibal said, "Reservation laws as applicable to Indian institutes will be applicable to the foreign institutes. There will be no discrimination."

When asked whether the international universities will have 100 percent ownership of the campuses, Sibal said, "If there is 100 percent ownership of private sector here, why not 100 percent ownership of foreign universities," he said.
