Nepal Maoists want to change national flag

Kathmandu, September 17 (ANI): A fresh dispute over the Nepal national flag has erupted between the UCPN (Maoist) and the other parties.

The parties are divided on whether to retain the current flag or design a new one that should contain stars equal in numbers to the number of federal units after the restructuring of the state.

The UCPN (Maoist), the Rastriya Janamorcha, and the Dalit Janajati Party demanded that the country's flag should be changed after restructuring the state.

The Maoists said that since the country has embraced Federalism, the national flag must also be changed suiting to the political changes.

However, the Nepali Congress, the CPN (UML), the Nepal Workers and Peasants Party, among others, opposed the idea saying the existing flag is good enough to identify Nepal.

Following this difference in the sub-committee of the Constituent Assembly committee on state restructuring, the parties are likely to delay the draft concept paper, Nepalnews reported.
