22-day-old baby with protruding heart dies

New Delhi, Sep 16: The infant born with a protruding heart and operated by AIIMS doctors passed away.

The 22-day-old baby suffered from a very rare congenital anomaly called Ectopia Cordis. In this condition, the heart projects outside the body through a split sternum.

The baby was shifted to the ICU in a stable but critical condition after a surgery on Thursday, Sep 3.

"The baby had developed pneumonia and suffered multiple organ failure," a doctor with the hospital said.

The child surgeons at the hospital said till date nobody with such a condition survived for so many days like this baby.

Born on the baby's father Chandar Majhi from Bihar brought the baby born on Wednesday, Aug 26, to the hospital.

"He was brought to the hospital on afternoon of August 28. He had developed infection by then as he was exposed to outside elements during his night-long train journey," the doctor said.
