SC warns UP against constructing more memorials

New Delhi, Sep 8: The Supreme Court lashed out at the Uttar Pradesh government for violating the court's order by constructing memorials of dalit icons along with those of Chief Minister, Mayawati in Lucknow.

The apex court warned Mayawati government against constructing memorials and statues on various protperties in Lucknow which are facing litigation in the Allahabad High Court.

Justice B N Agrawal and Justice Aftab Alam said that if this direction was also violated the state government will be asked to show its budget papers for the memorials after reminding the state that tax payers' money can not be spent without accounting for it.

The UP government had no choice but to agree on stopping further constructions till the court decides on the matter, and has vowed that no construction work would be carried out at B R Ambedkar Sthal in Lucknow.

The state government has time till Sep 24 to file its reply. The court has posted the matter for further hearing to Sep 29.
