K'taka leads in IT exports recording 23 pc growth

Bangalore, Sep 2: Recording a 23 per cent annual growth and procuring Rs 74,929 crore worth of IT and ITES exports for the year ending Mar 2009, Karnataka tops the country as a destination for software exports.

Despite smaller base, however,Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra recorded higher growth rates than Karnataka, which provides 34 per cent to the national exports.

84 new units registered with the STPI. The number of people employed in IT industry rose from 5.2 lakh in FY08 to 5.54 lakh in FY09.

“There is enough interest in the new units locating in the designated zones with many of them opting for the special economic zone (SEZ) scheme," said R Rajalakshmi, director, STPI.

The performance of the tier-II cities namely Mysore, Mangalore and Hubli together was 45 per cent with revenue touching Rs 2,423 crore.
