PM asks Assam Governor Sibtey Razi to quit

New Delhi, Aug 18: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has asked Assam Governor Syed Sibtey Razi to quit after allegations of corruption in the Jharkhand Raj Bhavan when he was Governor of Jharkhand, a English daily report said.

A senior official in the Prime Minister's Office said, "At a meeting on Aug 11, the PM asked Razi to relinquish office on health grounds but Razi insisted on time until Oct 2009 when his five-year term comes to an end."

Sources said, "The Prime Minister tried to persuade Razi to quit on 'moral' grounds as an official recall order would have meant further embarrassment for the UPA government, since it requires the President to issue a notification following recommendation from the Union Cabinet."

Sources further said that Razi has also sought a meeting with Home Minister P Chidamaram, which is likely to take place on Wednesday, Aug 19.

Razi former aides Rajesh Thakur and IAS officer Avinash Kumar are under the scam for having accumulated assets and misused funds meant for 34th National Games to be held in Jharkhand, sources added.
