US: 125 pc surge in illegal Indian migrants
Washington, Aug 11: According to the American Community Survey of the US Census Bureau Indians are the fastest growing Asian American community along with being the fastest-growing group of illegal immigrants in the country.
The survey says that America has recorded a growht of 53 pc when it comes to the number of Indian American population. The figures show that Asian Indian population in the US grew from almost 1,679,000 in 2000 to 2,570,000 in 2007.
Out of these people, 2,70,000 unauthorised Indians in the US - a 125 per cent jump since 2000. This also accounts for the largest percentage increase of any nation with more than 1,00,000 illegal immigrants.
Indian community in America is the third largest after Chinese Americans and Filipinos but when it comes to illegal immigration, Hispanic illegal immigrants largely outnumber the rest, followed by Mexicans.
However, Indian migrants are the fastest growing group of illegal immigrants in the US, according to US Department of Homeland Security report.
Studying the nature of the community, it was found that Indian are far more educated along with being able to speak English fluently compared to other immigrants. And they into the US with an H-1B visa so they do not have to cross the border illegally.
