Kohima, Aug 7 (ANI): The annual summer festival known as 'Thekranyi' of Mezoma, a Naga Angami village, near Kohima, was held amidst much pomp and gaiety.

The festival is of great importance for Mezoma residents and is a virtual treasure trove of history.

Young and old in their traditional finery, replete with colorful hand woven headgears, loincloth dresses and different traditional accessories, assemble at the venue singing melodious songs.he womenfolk play a vital role in the event, as the traditional attire worn during the occasion is mostly made by them.

"During this time, irrespective of age or gender, we feast together. We also gift foodstuff to our elders and send joyous blessings to each other. So this festival holds great significance for us," said M.H. Khawakhrie, a resident.

Another resident added, "This headgear that you see is made of wool. It has been made by our womenfolk. We wear them while taking turns to work in each others paddy field, gathering vegetables and hunting, as it is the local tradition."

The festival is also celebrated for rains, which in turn would result in a bountiful harvest.

During cultural presentations, the good looking and well-built people are lined up in the front, as it is believed that they bring honor and pride to the villagers.

Various indigenous sports also take place during the festival, which is believed to have started way back in 1901.

In order to enable tourists to have a glimpse of all the Naga festivals, the State Government has started the Hornbill Festival, which is celebrated at the Naga Heritage village, Kisama, between December 1 to December 5. By Vibou Ganguly (ANI)
