UK ends automatic citizenship for non-EU citizens
London, Aug 5: The UK government introduced a new method of 'probationary citizenship' under which the immigrants must demonstrate commitment to the country through voluntary work and integration.
The introduction of the new method, will end the automatic citizenship right for non-EU citizens including Indians in UK. Earlier, an immigrant became eligible for a British citizenship after working in UK for five years.
On Monday, Aug 4, the UK government unveiled the new proposals. Migrants will be awarded points based on the skills, earnings and qualifications. Points could be also be removed for 'bad' behaviour also.
Under the new system, applicants for citizenship require a total of 20 points to gain probationary citizenship. To gain full citizenship applicants must pass knowledge of life in the UK or English language test. Those who have failed test will have to retake it.
