Protests rock Manipur over 'fake encounter'

Imphal, Aug 3: Protestors hit the streets of Imphal on Sunday, Aug 2 agitating against a fake encounter in which a youth and a pregnant lady were killed on Jun 23. The people screamed anti-government slogans and called for a judicial probe into the issue.

This started when the New Delhi-based weekly called 'Tehelka' carried an expose on the shootout that took place in Manipur's capital. It reported that the encounter was 'fake'.

The local dailies on Sunday, Aug 2 carried these pictures which showed some police commandos surrounding and taking 27-year-old Chungkham Sanjit, into a pharmacy in Imphal and later bringing out his body.

Sanjit was reported part of People"s Liberation of Army and has surrendered a few years back. The police claims that the youngster was killed in an encounter.

Apart from this, a pregnant woman Rabina Devi was killed and five others, including two women and an Assam Rifles jawan were injured in the firing on Jun 23.

Apunba Lup, a conglomeration of several organisations has called on a 48-hour bandh. It has also said that there was no need of a judicial probe and has demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister, O Ibobi.
