Govt to take act against irregularity in export of non-basmati rice to African countries

New Delhi, July 30 (ANI): Commerce Minister Anand Sharma informed the Lok Sabha that the government has said that those found responsible for any irregularity in the export of non-basmati rice to African countries will be brought to book.

Replying to queries from members on the calling attention motion on the issue in the lower house on Thurday, Sharma said that full enquiry will be carried into the allegations.

Sharma said that it has come to notice of the Ministry that in some cases PSU's have infringed certain conditions of government notification for the export of non-basmati rice and the matter is being looked into.

He said remedial action will also be taken after the facts are known. Sharma rubbished the media reports alleging a scam in rice export.

Clarifying his point, Sharma said that rice is being exported to African countries keeping in view their pressing needs.

He added that diplomatic consideration of these exports amount only 170 crore rupees, while media reports have claimed a scam worth 2500 crore rupees.

He made it clear that export of non-basmati rice in relaxation on the ban was fully authorised by the government. (ANI)
