Mumbai, July (ANI): Maharashtra police intensified the hunt for more activists of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) in Vidarbha region on Friday.

The extensive search has picked up pace after the police arrested eight out of the 30 members who had gathered for a meeting at a village named Mana in Akola district on Sunday.

Initially, four members were arrested by the police at Murtizapur when they were returning from the meeting in Mana.

Later four more activists were tracked down and arrested from different locations.

"After getting the information that SIMI members would be returning after attending a meeting, their car was intercepted at Murtizapur. We found some objectionable material from their possession in the car. We have a Panchnama.

"The offence was registered under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act 1967. Four persons have been arrested," said Praveen Padwal, District Superintendent of Police, Akola.

The activists were arrested following a tip off and other intelligence inputs. (ANI)
