Suu Kyi conferred with Gandhi peace award

Durban, Jul 21: The imprisoned pro-democracy Myanmar leader, Aung San Suu Kyi was conferred with the Mahatma Gandhi price on Monday, Jul 20.

The Durban-based Gandhi Development trust handed over the International Award for Peace and Reconciliation to Suu Kyi's cousin, Sein Win.

Saying that everyone would have wanted to see Su Kyi collect the prize in person, her representative said, Obviously that would have been better (but) she has to attend to her trial in Burma at the moment. I'm worried they will find her guilty."

Win also said that Suu Kyi was a follower of Gandhi"s principles and moral values and appealed to India and South Africa to support Myannmar's fight for freedom.
