Amethi: Protests over power crisis turn violent

Lucknow, Jul 14: Protest against shortage of power supply in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi town turned violent on Monday, Jul 13 when a group of angry residents threw stones at the police, injuring 10 policemen. The situation still remained tense, the officials said.

The official said that the mob also barged inside the Kotwali police station and tried to set it on fire. Following pitched battles with the police, the security personnel responded with tear gas and batons to disperse the mob.

Superintendent of Police, R K Chaturvedi said, "We have registered a case against 30 people for resorting to violence during the protests that continued till late night." Rahul Gandhi, who represents Amethi in Parliament has asked his office to look into the matter. His office suspects that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati of being behind the power crisis protest but the Traders Association blames Rahul for it.
