10 killed, 50 injured in Italy gas explosion

Viareggio, Jun 30: Two railway cars which was filled with liquid gas exploded on Tuesday, Jun 30, killing at least 10 people in Italian city of Viareggio.

Fire officials said that the trains containing the gas tankers derailed and exploded and fire spread rapidly that flowed over nearby 10 houses. The officials also said that at least 35 people suffered serious burns.

"The explosion was like a bomb," a witness said. As many as 300 firefighters were involved in the rescue efforts. "The cars flipped over on their sides on the rails and the gas spread out among the nearest houses before exploding," said Antonio Gambardella, commander of the firefighters.

The Italian state railway company said that the trains were not collided but material fatigue in the expolded tanker was possible cause.
