HIV-infected couples to marry in Maharashtra

Sangli (Maharashtra), June 29 (ANI): A matchmaking ceremony was organised in Sangli in Maharashtra for HIV-infected couples on Sunday.

The ceremony in which 155 prospective grooms and 35 brides participated was organised by Amhich Amche, a Sangli-based voluntary group that works for HIV/AIDS people.

Savita, an HIV-positive woman said that she was able to find herself a groom.Out of all the grooms who are here I like one of them and would like to spend rest of my life with him," she said.

One of the prospective grooms said he wanted an HIV-positive partner for life as he did not want to spread the deadly infection.

"I'm HIV-positive for last three years and I have come here for marriage as I don't think anyone should be infected with HIV because of me," said Satish Patil.

India accounts for roughly half the estimated HIV infected population in Asia with 2.47 million cases. (ANI)
