Govt declares CPI-M a terrorist outfit, bans it

New Delhi, Jun 22: The Union government has banned the Communist Party of India- Maoist (CPI-M) by declaring it a terrorist organization.

Overriding the Left Front's opposition on the decision of banning the CPI-M, the Union Home Ministry issued the notification declaring the CPI-M a terrorist organization on Monday, Jun 22.

Maintaining the Left front's stance Communist Party of India MP Gurudas Dasgupta said, "I do not approve this. By declaring this illegal the Maoist movement cannot be fought. It has to be fought politically."

Through the day, the Left front was divided over the issue. The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Saturday, Jun 20 had said that his government was considering banning the the CPI (Maoist) on the Centre's suggestion after he met the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister P Chidambaram.
