Lucknow, Jun 19: The Mayawati government blowing away money on statues has invited criticism from the public sphere and the Supreme Court.

The UP government has reportedly spent almost up to 3.49 crore on Chief Minister Mayawati"s eight statues, Rs 3.37 crore on seven statues of her mentor Kanshiram and Rs 52.20 crore on 60 statues of elephants which is the election symbol of BSP.

Supreme Court advocate Ravi Kant got hold of this information from LDA, the agency handling these installments through the Right To Information Act (RTI). Ravi Kant along with Sukumar filed a petition with the Supreme Court asking the judiciary to stop the state government from throwing away people's money.

The twp petitioners have also approached the CBI asking them to probe into the statues' scam.

The petitioners have also noted that installing the elephant statues violates the election code as it glorifies the party's symbol. They argue that the state needs funds for social issues, public health and education and spending funds on the statues was wasteful expenditure.
