Communists stage protest against Maoists violence affecting West Bengal
New Delhi, June 18 (ANI): Members and supporters of the Communist Party of India-Marxists (CPI-M) staged a sit-in demonstration in national capital on Thursday to protest against the violence by the Maoists in the West Medinipur ditrict of West Bengal.
"As far as Maoists are concerned these are gangs who believe in violence. Their politics is only one which is to destabilise Bengal and to do the job of the vested interests who do not want the Left Front government in West Bengal," said Brinda Karat, member of CPI-M.
"Certainly the state government is doing its very best to ensure and to appeal to people in that area not to fall prey to this kind of conspiracy of the Maoists," Karat added.
Banking on an unusual issue concerning the tribals residing in Medinipur district and the neighbouring state of Jharkhand, the Maoists, who want to grab power through an armed struggle, have killed at least seven CPI-M supporters this week at Lalgarh.
The communists-led Left Front has been ruling West Bengal for more than three decades whereas the Maoists, who operate from jungle bases, have expanded their influence among villagers by tapping their resentment at the government's recent pro-industry policies that called for acquisition of agricultural lands.
