Communal violence: Curfew imposed in Meerut

Meerut, Jun 17: An indefinite curfew has been imposed in few areas of Meerut after violence was sparked off over a parking dispute.

The argument started over parking of a Tractor Trolley in Rohta Road on Tuesday evening, Jun 15. The police said that people belonging to a particular community from Orissa were travelling in that trolley. A verbal clash between the shopkeepers and the travelling group grew into a violent one.

As the news of this fight spread across the city, people came out on the streets threw stones and damaged properties, the police said.

"Indefinite curfew has been imposed as a precautionary step in four police station areas of Old Meerut, namely Brahmapuri, Lisadi Gate, Kotwali and Delhi Gate," said Rakesh Jolly, SP Meerut city.

District Administration has asked the people to stay calm. Rapid Action Force and PAC have been deployed in the troubled areas.
