Former Irish police officer joins Benazir's assassination probe team

United Nations, June 10 (ANI): The United Nations independent inquiry commission to investigate the assassination of Pakistan's former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto is finally complete with the appointment of Peter Fitzgerald of Ireland as the third member of the team.

Fitzgerald, a former deputy police commissioner of the Irish National Police Force, Garda Siochana, was a member of the UN investigation on the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Harriri.

Last February, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced formation of a three-member commission, headed by Chile's UN Ambassador Heraldo Munoz, and including Indonesia's former Attorney General Marzuki Dar Usman.

However, it took more than three months before the third member was chosen and agreed upon by both the world body and the Pakistan government, The Dawn quoted sources, as saying.

The commission is expected to begin its work some time next month, they added.

Pakistan had formally requested the United Nations last July to appoint an inquiry commission.

However, the Pakistan government, which has already given United Nations more than 1.8 million dollars to facilitate the commission, did not agree on all the members of the commission till now.

In April, a UN team led by Mark Quaterman visited Pakistan to finalise logistical requirements for the commission.

The UN Secretary General is expected to formally announce the name of the third member of the commission and the timeline for inquiry. (ANI)
