Meira Kumar unanimously elected as LS Speaker

New Delhi, Jun 3: Meira Kumar on Wednesday, Jun 3 was unanimously elected as Lok Sabha Speaker giving the country the first woman and the first Dalit to hold the post.

Meira Kumar was backed unanimously by the ruling UPA and the Bharatiya Janata Party-led opposition NDA. Smiling Meira Kumar took the seat while the parliament resounded with applause.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh speaking at the 'historic event' said, "We salute the women of the country".

Opposition leader LK Advani who also backed the candidate nominated by UPA reminded her that she has more opportunity and power to strive for the nation's good as a speaker than as a minister.
