Malaysian Indian Congress president's family waits in the wings

Kuala Lumpur, June 2 (ANI): Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) politics may be a family affair after S. Samy Vellu steps down as its president.hile there is talk that the party supremo's son, S. Vell Paari, may contest the vice-presidency, there is speculation that a cousin may also seek high office in the party.

S.P. Muthuveloo, son of Samy Vellu's older brother, is said to be eyeing the Youth chief post, but the 38-year-old lawyer has yet to announce his intentions.

The post fell vacant after S.A. Vigneswaran resigned last year following a fallout with Samy Vellu.

T. Mohan, who is said to be Samy Vellu clansman, was later appointed national Youth coordinator. Mohan, who will contest the Youth chief' post, welcomed the challenge, reports the New Strait Times.

Muthuveloo's supporters have already started meeting and talking to branch and division leaders nationwide over the past few weeks.

Muthuveloo's education, image and ability to communicate with all levels of society, especially the educated group, is expected to appeal to delegates, but Mohan's plus point will be his ability get down to work and move with the grassroots. (ANI)
