Politicians welcome reports of first woman to be installed as Lok Sabha Speaker
New Delhi, June 1(ANI): Cutting across party lines, politicians on Monday welcomed reports of first woman to be installed as Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
With its historic move to install a low-caste woman speaker, the Congress Party is hoping to give the message of social empowerment.
Reportedly, Water Resources Minister Meira Kumar, a Dalit, is tipped to be the new Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said the step would reduce prevailing disparity in the society.
"I think this is a healthy tradition. It will reduce the prevailing imbalance with women in our society. Women will feel that they have an equal status in the society," Patel said.
Saying that Kumar is an accomplished parliamentarian, Congress leader Ajay Maken said she would run the House in a better way.
"Besides, being a woman and low-caste, Kumar is an accomplished parliamentarian. She will conduct the Parliament in a good way, " Maken said.
Senior leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Sitaram Yechury hoped that Kumar would responsibly fulfill her duties.
"It's really good that a woman becomes Speaker. Kumar should responsibly fulfill her duties," said Yechury.
The Samajwadi Party (SP) also welcomed the reports of installation of first woman Speaker.
"I expect that Kumar will conduct the Parliament in a better way," said Ramgopal Yadav, a senior SP leader. (ANI)
