Australia: Petrol bomb thrown at Indian student

Melbourne, May 29: Is Australia no longer safe for Indian students? Four attacks are reported with in a span of three week. In the latest incident Rajesh Kumar, a student suffered 30 pc burns on Tuesday, May 26 after a suspected petrol bomb was hurled at him in home in Harris Park in Sydney Australia.

Neighbours said that an unidentified person threw what looked a small petrol bomb at Rajesh who was sitting on his bed in the front room of his rented house. Arminder Singh, Rajesh's room mates said he saw the latter run out out of his bedroom and out of the front door with his back and arms on fire.

India expressed concern over the growing number of attack on its students in Australia and asked the Oz government to ensure the safety of the students. Australia in return has promised action and reports suggest that certain arrests are made too.

18 pc of Australia's total foreign population are Indian students, the second largest group after the Chinese. According to Australian police atleast 500 cases of assault on Indian students are reported between Oct 2008 and Mar 2009.
