Mamata returns Tata's Rs 27,70,660 cheque

Kolkata, May 29: There are reports that Trinamool Congress' Mamata Banerjee turned down a donation of Rs 27,70,660 from the Tatas which was supposed to be a tribute for the party's performance in the recently concluded elections.

This gesture has claimed considerable interest and attention as it was Mamata Banerjee who shooed away Tata Motors' Nano Factory from West Bengal earlier this year. Following a brilliant win of 19 out of 42 seats in Bengal in the 2009 elections as opposed to just one seat in 2004, Trinamool Congress was greeted by a fat cheque from Tata Trust on Tuesday, May 26.

The cheque was sent through an emissary to Banerjee's Delhi residence along with a letter which stated that Tata Trust selected beneficiaries among various political parties based on their performance in the polls.

Mamata Banerjee who has 'politely' returned the cheque to the Tatas said "The election is over. What will I do with the money now?"

"We will also reply to their letter in a few days. I have asked my party colleagues to draft the reply," Banerjee said on Friday, May 29.
