UK junior health minister says MPs' may go to jail over expenses scam

London, May 22 (ANI): Britain's junior Health Minister Ben Bradshaw has said that Members of Parliament accused of abusing the expenses system may go to jail.

Bradshaw said any members shown to have broken the law should "face up to the consequences".

"Some may go to jail," he told the BBC Question Time audience.Shadow Foreign Secretary William Hague said that a number of MPs might face criminal prosecution after details of their claims were disclosed in The Daily Telegraph.

Both the Metropolitan Police and the Crown Prosecution Service are coming under increasing pressure to mount a full investigation into the MPs' expenses scandal.

Eight members have so far resigned, agreed to step down or been suspended by their parties over dubious claims under the second home allowances system. The Speaker has also announced his departure amid criticism of his handling of the crisis.

Allegations that some MPs failed to pay capital gains tax on their taxpayer-funded second homes or claimed for mortgages that did not exist have attracted particular ire. (ANI)
